Topic 8 一次设备坏掉的经历(低频)

1. What are the common useful home appliances that people often use these days?
There are tons, but the first one that I can think of is a microwave. As a student, I use a microwave every day to warm up my food59. And I often buy microwave food from supermarket; it’s pretty tasty and easy to cook with the microwave. My favorite dish to make in a microwave is instant noodles60. To people who are really bad at cooking, like me, using a microwave is the most convenient way to cook meals. And…some other helpful home appliances are toasters61 and coffee-makers.

2. Are you good at handling problems on your own?
Well, that honestly depends on what the problem is. If it’s something to do with my personal life, I can usually handle it well. I’m pretty good at settling conflicts62, especially the ones between me and my family or friends. But if it’s something that requires a lot of experience or skills, like a mechanical issue, then I have to call my parents, or even an expert if the problem’s pretty bad.

3. What do people feel when they buy new equipment?
I think a lot of people feel really pleased when they buy new equipment. Shopping is usually a happy
thing to most of us. For example, I felt really happy when I bought a new rice cooker. The old one made
the rice too dry, so getting a new one made me really happy because the new one is much better. Plus, it was nice to be able to afford buying an appliance. You know most appliances aren’t very cheap, so
buying a new one made me feel very accomplished63.

4. Do you think modern technology makes people lazier?
Well, yes…I suppose that back in the old days, people needed to work harder because they didn’t have so many kinds of modern technologies to help them work. So they had to do a lot of basic work themselves. But now that everything is designed to be as convenient as possible, people tend to be a lot lazier when it comes to work in their everyday lives. For example, my father told me when he was a student, he often needed to look up information in a library, and that was very time-consuming64. But now, I can just use my cellphone to google everything I want to know, so I wouldn’t go to a library just to look up information.

5. When an electronic item of yours does not work, would you repair it or buy a new one?
Well, I generally try to repair an electronic item if it doesn’t work. For example, I recently broke the display on my laptop. Fixing it wasn’t exactly cheap, but buying a new one would’ve cost me a lot of money. So since the only broken part was the display, I decided to repair it. Even though the repair fee was also expensive, it was still much cheaper than buying a new one. I think in the end, fixing the broken product is usually the best option.
