Last month, when I had a hot pot with my friend Jane at my university; she shared with me about mathematical modeling in which she was interested but I was not.
She mainly told me two aspects of it. Firstly mathematics models had incredible power and beauty, and it was the key to innovations in most science, technology; engineering, and mathematics-related fields. Secondly; it helped us to manipulate the world around us. To solve modeling problems, we could make assumptions, choose mathematical approaches, and assess the solution for usefulness and accuracy. Then we could rework and adjust the model until it provided an accurate and predictive result of the situation.
She was so passionate about it. However; I was not interested in it at all and I felt very bored, because I thought it’s hard to understand. Actually, I didn’t get excited about numbers and formulas the way I got excited about history; science, languages, or other subjects that are easier to connect to personally. I saw math as abstract and irrelevant figures that are difficult to understand. Besides, I had a bad experience in mathematics because I couldn’t know how to apply it in real life even after six-year learning. You know, being forced to do something that you don’t understand for so long is not particularly pleasant.
